Lizhong He studied Applied Chemistry as an undergraduate student in Department of Chemistry at Tianjin University, China. He then moved to the Department of Biochemical Engineering for a Master’ degree. During this time, he worked on a multistage affinity filtration process, aiming to develop a new separation method for protein purification.
In 1999, Lizhong traveled to Germany to start his PhD study at the GKSS Research Centre, Geesthacht. His research topic was self-assembly and affinity adsorption of glycoconjugates (glycolipids and glycoproteins). The work included structure investigation of micelle formed by glycolipids, the effect of ligand and organic solvent on lectin conformation, transport properties of glycoconjugates, and modeling of the affinity adsorption process.
Before joining CNB in 2004, Lizhong spent one and half years as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Max-Planck-Institute for Polymer Research (MPIP) at Mainz, Germany, where he studied functional tethered lipid membranes. The project involved different surface-sensitive techniques such as surface plasmon field-enhanced fluorescence spectroscopy (SPFS), impedance spectroscopy, neutron and x-ray reflectometry, and Langmuir-Blodgett transfer.
Lizhong’s research interests include biomolecules and thin films at interfaces, structure of macromolecules and colloids, affinity interaction of proteins and ligands, and functional lipid membrane as biosensor.
Lizhong has a key leadership role in IFB with overall responsibility for scientific research investigating the interfacial behaviour of proteins and their refolding.
