Born and raised in Perth, Western Australia, I studied Chemical Engineering
at Curtin University of Technology before working as an operations engineer
and then as a software developer for BP. After 5 years in the oil industry
I needed a change and decided the bio/nano area was the most exciting
research area around. I found the Australian Institute of Bio-engineering
and Nanotechnology on the web and in particular the Center for Biomolecular
Engineering looked like it fitted my research interests. A little reading
convinced me that the University of Queensland is the best place in
Australia to be studying in this area, so my fiancé and I packed our bags
and moved to Brisbane!
My project is with the Interfacial Bio-engineering group in the CBE looking
at the self assembling properties of proteins and peptides on the surfaces
of droplets in oil in water emulsions. The most common emulsion most people
are familiar with is mayonnaise (though emulsions are used in hundreds of
everyday products and in many different industries) so I guess you could
say I’m trying to make smart mayonaisse!
