Computing Facilities
The Division supports an Ethernet network with close
to a hundred PCs connected. Electronic mail, Internet access and
centralised printing are supported by Novell Netware servers. Access to
supercomputing and parallel computing is available. Research staff have
access to computers within their chosen research group and after hours to
some undergraduate computing laboratories which support ASPEN-PLUS and HYSIM flowsheeting, NIMBUS dynamic simulators, GAMS and AMPL optimisers,
MATLAB, TkSolver, Tacticians and other software.
Process Control
Centralised data logging and control is available for
research and teaching experiments to any TCP/IP host on the network from
an OS/2-based server. A crystalliser/evaporator, a heat exchanger rig, a
chemical reaction rig and several small process control experiments are
computer connected for teaching.
Electronics Workshop
The Electronics Workshop assists in the technical
design, construction, commissioning and maintenance of equipment for the
teaching, research and administration of the Division of Chemical
Engineering. The electronics workshop also gives IT support for the
Department's Undergraduate Computer Labs, Postgraduate and Staff Computing
needs.
The workshop is both a repair facility with the added
capability of designing electronic devices for specialised projects. High
levels of expertise and accuracy are required for many projects, which our
highly qualified staff provide.

Library
The
Dorothy Hill
Physical Sciences and Engineering Library supports the teaching,
learning and research needs of the Chemical Engineering Division and
holds the University's main collection of resources in the areas of
engineering and physical sciences. Access to over 6,000 fulltext
electronic journals and databases such as Web of Science, SciFinder
Scholar, Science Direct and EI Compendex is available through the
Library catalogue. The
Library offers a range of
training courses for postgraduate students including the popular
"Information Skills for Researchers and Postgraduates". The Library
provides a
document delivery service free of charge to all postgraduate students.
For more information about library services please contact

Mechanical Workshop
The mechanical workshop is staffed by four well skilled
and qualified tradesmen with the capabilities to manufacture research and
pilot plant equipment in a wide range of fields. The workshop has the
capability to machine and fabricate inmost material grades of metals,
plastics and wood on a range os machines for turning, milling, shaping,
cutting, engraving and welding. The workshop also carries out repair and
maintenance on a vast range of appliances and equipment.
Mr Des
Cameron (workshop manager), Room 107, is the person to contact with
details and drawings of any authorised work requests so a feasible design
and construction method can be determined along with an approximate time
of completion.
The workshop is equipped with:
-
